Education Week: What Is ‘Excellence for All’?.
While there are some good points made in this article, and the author aknowledges as much, the issue is that, historically, it is the children of the poor and color who get tracked into “having the choice of not going to college.” Does everybody need to be college ready? Yes. Does everybody have to go to college? No. The decision of going to college should be that of the individual; it should be the role of the institution to prepare the student for college so the student can make a reasoned decision; not one that was decided upon him or her.

Hampstead Middle School ‘ZAPs’ out zeroes – EagleTribune.com, North Andover, MA.
The program doesn’t allow students to take a zero for an assignment they do not complete. Instead, they must finish the assignment during their lunch period or recess, usually supervised by Principal Patricia Grassbaugh or Assistant Principal Owen Harrington.
